A doodle of my 'vampire' character, Elias, that I have had sitting around for a while. Decided to practice mad cells on it. XD
Elias is a doctor, and I swear to god the resemblance to Sweeney Todd was totally unintentional (though it's way less apparent in colour than it was in B&W).
CHARACTER/PLOT STUFF: (Suspend belief - It contains MAGIX. tl;dr: vampires are not vampires, are actually holy knights)
Alright, so basically, vampires in their world are not exactly what you would think, though they do drink blood, and have a feud of sorts with werewolves. In the plot line, werewolves existed first, and their affliction is caused by an actual blood disease that can be passed between people through wounds, or from a mother to their child.
In the 1400's, the church believed that werewolfism/lycanthropy was a mark of the devil, and started a campaign to wipe out the hellspawn. This resulted in the creation of a special group of templar-like holy knights, several hundred strong. They called themselves Paladins.
They were also blessed with conditional immortality, so that they could continue god's work for as long as necessary - However, preserving immortality always has a price. In order for them to preserve their immortality, it would be necessary to 'steal' someone else's years. This was accomplished by killing someone, and drinking their blood.
For a long time, the church ruled, and it was possible to replenish their years easily, either through willing sacrifice or from taking the life of someone already sentenced to death. However, as the popularity and sway of the church began to wane, it became more and more difficult to gain legitimate access to blood. Likewise, the memory of the Paladins began to fade from the public.
With no memory of the Paladins, or their holy mission, you can see how it would be easy for the public to equate murderous, blood drinking people with the (purely fictitious) vampire creatures that graced their folk tales. Soon, the paladins found themselves hunted by humans in the same way that they hunted the werewolves.
Over the course of the years, the paladin ranks diminished - Some were killed by the vampire-fearing public, others in conflict with werewolves, and many gave up their immortality to live out the rest of their lives in peace as normal humans. The remainder went into hiding, keeping their work hidden. As time does, it wiped away memory, and soon vampires once again became creatures of legend
Now, in the modern day, the paladins find themselves in an unfortunate, but somewhat hilarious, position - Forgotten in time by the people and by the church, ranks reduced exponentially, they find that werewolves now outnumber them by thousands.
Only those that were able to grow and change with the times remain, and they must complete their mission in order to earn a place in heaven.
